Sellerley Farm - The Home of The Giant Egg

spacer

Sellerley Farm is a family run farm producing milk and free range eggs for the last 80 years.

With a herd of Friesian cattle - the black and white ones - Sellerley Farm produces thousands of litres of high quality milk per year.cows

During the warmer months the cattle are seen eating fresh grass in the fields returning to the farm buildings for regular milking.

When the days become shorter the cattle are brought undercover to protect them from the harsh winter weather.

Milk collected from the herd is stored in refrigerated stainless steel vats awaiting collection by tanker for milk processing and for manufacturing into other products.

Most milk in the UK is drunk fresh maybe on a breakfast cereal or in a drink. To ensure the safety of the milk and to extend its storage life, it is heat-treated. Various methods are used.
In the UK over 90% of milk is pasteurised; nearly all the rest is UHT or sterilized.Milk vat

Milk is flash pasteurised by heating it to 72°C for about 15 seconds.

Sterilised milk undergoes heating it to 105°C for 15 seconds. This extends the life of the milk quite a lot but may make the milk taste slightly strange.

UHT milk is heated to 130°C for 2 seconds.

Free-range eggs

Here at Sellerley Farm our hens have free access to the open air, the weather, fresh grass, and they take their chances with the natural fox population.

The average laying hen produces more than 280 eggs a year. Hens begin egg production at five to six months (19 weeks) of age and continue to lay for at least 12 months.

Producing over 700 eggs per day our hens can come and go as they choose within their multi-acre enclosure.

Egg traysThe humble egg is an ideal all in one food. It provides many essential vitamins and can easily be turned into many delicious meals or just eaten as a 'dippy egg' with toast soldiers.

Fresh milk and eggs are available seven days a week between 7am and 9pm in our self service hen house.... Just look for the Giant Egg.

Once you bring eggs home, refrigerate them in their cartons until ready for use and try to use them within 14 days.

This way you protect them from possible cross-contamination from other foods and maintain their fresh quality longer.

The hen houseBe sure to check the carton for eggs that might have cracked in transportation and discard them.
